English

Welcome to the Limes website. The Limes is the border of the former Roman Empire, from around 57 BC until around 400 AD. Limes (pronounced laim-ees) is Latin for ‘border’ and ‘path’.

In the Netherlands, the Limes runs from Katwijk on the North Sea coast via the Oude Rijn river and the city of Arnhem to Germany. This living monument is the largest archaeological feature in the Netherlands, and still influences the Dutch culture to this very day. This renewed website contains more information on the Limes.

Some parts of this website have been translated in English. You can find here documents about:

Furthermore there are two Limes websites with more specific information about the Limes in the Netherlands:

- Project Limes (www.project.limes.nl) is intended for those seeking more information on the Limes as regards archaeological research, spatial planning and aspects relating to government activity and international developments.
- Limes downloads (www.downloads.limes.nl) discloses our library of Limes-related documents. Operation is simple: select the criteria that apply to the subject you want information on. The description of the documents is in Dutch and English.
